Sleep Apnea Treatment in Woodhaven

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Woodhaven

You wake up tired again. Your partner mentions the snoring, the pauses, the elbow nudges at 2 a.m. You get through the workday on coffee, fight an afternoon slump, and go to bed hoping tonight will be different. For a lot of the Woodhaven patients we see at our office on Allen Rd., that pattern has been going on for years before anyone connects it to something a dentist can help with. We're glad when they finally ask, because an oral appliance is often a straightforward, comfortable way to sleep and breathe better.

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the soft tissues of the throat and tongue relax during sleep and block the airway, interrupting breathing over and over through the night. Those interruptions pull you out of deep sleep, even if you never remember waking. The result is loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches, dry mouth, irritability and daytime drowsiness that no amount of sleep seems to fix.

Dentistry fits into this picture because the jaw and tongue position play a direct role in how open the airway stays. Oral appliance therapy uses a custom-made device, worn only during sleep, that holds the lower jaw and tongue in a forward position so the airway stays open. It looks and feels much like a night guard, but it's designed and adjusted with your airway in mind. There's nothing to plug in, nothing to carry but a small case, and for many people it's far easier to live with than bulkier equipment. We make and adjust these appliances through our own in-house dental lab, which means fitting changes don't require shipping your device away and waiting.

A good candidate is usually someone who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, snores heavily, or has struggled to stay consistent with other treatment. Because we're a family practice treating all ages, we often hear about these symptoms secondhand — a spouse at a cleaning appointment, an adult child worried about a parent. We also notice physical signs during routine exams, like worn teeth from nighttime clenching or a dry mouth pattern that points toward mouth breathing during sleep.

Diagnosis of sleep apnea itself comes from a sleep study ordered by a physician, and we work within that framework rather than around it. What we provide is the dental side: evaluating whether your teeth, jaw joints and bite can support an appliance, then designing one that fits you specifically. Patients who have a lot of missing teeth, significant jaw joint pain, or unstable restorations may need other work addressed first, and we'll tell you honestly what we find. Your free consultation is the place to sort all of that out before you commit to anything.

What Treatment Looks Like, Step by Step

The process begins with a conversation and an exam. We look at your bite, your jaw movement, your existing dental work and your airway, and we listen to how your sleep actually feels. From there we take impressions or digital records so the appliance can be built to your mouth.

Once the appliance is ready, we fit it, show you how to insert and remove it, and make initial adjustments. Most appliances allow the jaw position to be advanced gradually, so we'll see you for follow-ups to fine-tune the setting as your body adapts. Here's what Woodhaven patients can generally expect:

  • A complimentary consultation and exam focused on your airway, bite and jaw
  • Custom records taken in our office, with the appliance made and adjusted through our on-site lab
  • A fitting visit with instructions for wear, cleaning and storage
  • Follow-up adjustment visits to dial in comfort and jaw position
  • Ongoing checks at your regular cleaning and exam appointments

Comfort, Aftercare and Keeping It Working

Mild soreness, extra saliva or a temporary odd bite feeling in the morning are common in the first weeks and usually settle as you adjust. Simple morning jaw exercises and gradual advancement help. If something pinches or rubs, call us — adjustments are quick, and with our lab on site we can often handle repairs and relines without a long wait.

Daily care is simple: rinse and brush the appliance, let it dry, and keep it in its case. Bring it to your cleanings so we can inspect it for wear and confirm it still fits well, especially if you've had new fillings, crowns or orthodontic treatment. Appliances don't last forever, and we'd rather replace one on schedule than let you sleep with a device that's stopped doing its job.

Paying for Care Without the Guesswork

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary benefits check, so you'll know what's covered before treatment starts. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for patients 17 and younger, with no deductibles, no annual maximum, no waiting period and no pre-authorizations. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments at 100%, plus 20% to 50% off other treatment. CareCredit financing is also available. Se habla español.
