A twinge when you sip something cold. A rough edge your tongue keeps finding. A dark spot a hygienist points out on an X-ray before you feel anything at all. Cavities rarely announce themselves politely, and the small ones are the easiest and least expensive to handle. A filling is how we stop decay from spreading, rebuild the part of the tooth that's been lost, and get you back to eating and smiling without thinking about it — usually in a single visit at our Woodhaven office.
Tooth decay happens when bacteria in plaque produce acids that dissolve enamel. Once that surface breaks down, the damage doesn't repair itself. A dental filling removes the decayed portion of the tooth and replaces it with a restorative material that seals the space, restores the tooth's shape, and lets it handle chewing pressure again. Left alone, a small cavity keeps growing inward toward the nerve, which is how a simple appointment turns into a root canal, a crown, or an emergency visit.
We place fillings for patients of every age here, from children whose first molars are just coming in to adults replacing an old restoration that has worn, chipped, or developed decay around its edges. Fillings also handle more than classic cavities: a chipped corner, a worn spot near the gumline, or a small fracture can often be repaired the same way. Related composite bonding uses similar tooth-colored material for cosmetic touch-ups, so a repair can be both functional and natural looking.
Most people come to us one of two ways — through a routine exam and cleaning where we catch decay early, or because something started hurting. Both are welcome. Our hygienists and doctors look for decay at every checkup using visual exams and X-rays, and if you're in pain or something broke over the weekend, we offer same-day emergency appointments rather than making you wait it out.
Before we begin, we'll show you what we're seeing and explain the plan in plain language. A filling is typically a single appointment: the area is numbed, the decay is removed, and the restoration is placed, shaped, and polished so your bite feels right. If decay has reached deeper than expected, we'll talk with you about options such as a crown or root canal therapy before moving forward — no surprises mid-procedure. Because we have an on-site dental lab and five doctors covering general dentistry, oral surgery, and orthodontics, follow-up care stays under one roof.
Comfort matters here, and we treat it as part of the treatment, not an extra. Patients can use our comfort menu during any visit, and we offer nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation for those who need more help relaxing. Nervous adults, kids, and patients with special healthcare needs are all part of our daily practice. Se habla español.
Aftercare and How Long Results Last
Numbness from the anesthetic usually wears off within a couple of hours, so we'll ask you to be careful with hot drinks and chewing until full sensation returns — this matters most with children, who can bite a cheek or lip without realizing it. Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure for a few days afterward is common. If your bite feels high or uneven once the numbness fades, call us; a quick adjustment takes only minutes.
Fillings last longest when the rest of your mouth is healthy. That means brushing twice daily, cleaning between your teeth, and keeping up with regular cleanings and exams so we can watch the edges of existing restorations. For patients prone to decay, we also offer fluoride treatments and dental sealants, and for those who grind at night, a custom night guard made in our on-site lab helps protect both natural teeth and restorations from wear.
