You wake up after what should have been eight hours of sleep and still feel like you never rested. Your partner mentions the snoring again — the loud stretches, then the unsettling pauses. Maybe you've already been told you have sleep apnea and tried a CPAP machine, but the mask ended up in a drawer after a few frustrating weeks. This is one of the most common conversations we have with adults in Woodhaven, Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock, and it's one where dentistry has a genuinely useful role to play.
Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the soft tissues of the throat relax during sleep and block the airway, interrupting breathing over and over through the night. Those interruptions pull you out of deep sleep, even if you never fully wake up, which is why daytime fatigue, morning headaches, trouble concentrating and heavy snoring are such frequent complaints. A sleep apnea diagnosis comes from a physician or sleep study — what we offer at our Woodhaven office is a custom oral appliance, one of the recognized treatment options for people who have been diagnosed and need an alternative to CPAP or something more practical for travel.
An oral appliance looks a bit like a sturdy night guard, but it does something different. Rather than simply protecting teeth from grinding, it gently repositions the lower jaw to help keep the airway open while you sleep. There's no mask, no hose and no electricity involved, which is exactly why many patients find they can actually stick with it. It fits in a small case, works on a camping trip or a red-eye flight, and makes no noise at all.
The best candidates are adults who have a confirmed diagnosis and either can't tolerate CPAP, don't want it, or need a backup for nights away from home. We also hear from people whose snoring has become a real strain on a relationship, and from patients whose partners noticed the breathing pauses long before they did. If you haven't been evaluated yet, that's the first step, and we're happy to talk through where you are in the process during a complimentary consultation.
A few practical things are worth knowing before you commit. The appliance has to fit precisely, so we take careful records of your bite and the way your jaw moves. Existing dental work matters too — loose teeth, untreated gum disease or a tooth that needs a crown should be addressed first so the appliance has a stable foundation. Because we see patients of all ages for everything from cleanings to restorative care, we can handle that groundwork in the same office rather than sending you elsewhere.
One advantage we're especially glad to offer is our on-site dental lab. Appliances, night guards, crowns and dentures are made and adjusted right here, which shortens turnaround time and makes fine-tuning far simpler. If something rubs a spot on your gums or the fit feels off after a few weeks, the adjustment often happens during a single short visit instead of a mail-out-and-wait cycle.
Getting Used to Your Appliance and Keeping It Working
The first several nights take some adjusting. Most people notice the appliance at first, may produce a little extra saliva, and sometimes feel mild jaw or tooth soreness in the morning that eases as the muscles adapt. We talk through all of this ahead of time so nothing comes as a surprise, and we schedule follow-up visits to check the fit and make small positioning changes as your comfort improves.
Long-term care is refreshingly simple:
- Rinse and brush the appliance each morning with a soft brush and let it dry fully before storing it
- Keep it in its case, away from pets and away from heat that can warp the material
- Bring it to your regular cleanings and exams so we can inspect it for wear and check your bite
- Let us know right away if it cracks, loosens or starts feeling different — repairs and relines are handled in our lab
Your physician remains part of this picture. We coordinate with your care team so your progress is monitored appropriately, and we'll discuss whether follow-up sleep testing is recommended for you.
Insurance, Financing and Booking Your Visit
