A tooth that cracks on a Sunday dinner, a filling that falls out before a work trip, a child who takes a hit to the mouth at a Woodhaven soccer game — dental problems rarely wait for a convenient opening in your calendar. When something hurts, bleeds, swells, or simply feels wrong, you need someone who can look at it today and tell you what is actually going on. We keep room in our schedule for same-day emergency visits at our office on Allen Road, and we see patients of every age, from toddlers to grandparents.

Dental emergencies cover a wide range of situations, and not all of them involve severe pain. A knocked-out or loosened tooth after a fall or sports injury is urgent, and so is a tooth that has broken down to the gumline. Lingering throbbing that wakes you at night, swelling in the face or jaw, a bitten lip or cheek that will not stop bleeding, or a dental abscess all call for prompt attention. So do the less dramatic problems that still derail your day: a lost crown, a cracked denture, a broken partial, a sharp edge from a fractured filling, or a wire from braces poking the inside of your cheek.

We also hear from people who are unsure whether what they are feeling even counts as an emergency. If you are in doubt, call us. Sensitivity that fades in a few seconds is different from pain that builds and lingers, and a quick conversation can save you from either waiting too long or worrying unnecessarily. Our team treats children from age one through the teen years, including children with special healthcare needs, and we welcome families from Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock as well as Woodhaven.

The first goal of an emergency visit is simple: find the source of the problem and get you comfortable. That usually begins with an exam and X-rays so we can see what is happening below the surface, because a tooth that looks intact on the outside can be fractured or infected underneath. We will explain what we find in plain language, outline your options, and tell you what can be handled right now versus what is better scheduled once the area has settled down.

Treatment depends entirely on the diagnosis. Deep decay or a fracture may call for a dental filling or a crown. Infection inside the tooth is often resolved with root canal therapy, which we provide for front teeth, premolars and molars. When a tooth cannot be saved, we offer simple and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth removal, and we can discuss replacement options such as implants, bridges or partial dentures when you are ready. Gum problems, including painful or bleeding gums, may point toward gum disease treatment, scaling and root planing, or periodontal maintenance. For anxious patients or more involved procedures, we offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation.

Our on-site dental lab is a real advantage in urgent moments. Because crowns, dentures, night guards and other appliances are made and adjusted here, we can often handle same-day crowns, same-day dentures, relines and repairs rather than sending your appliance away for a week.

Comfort, Aftercare and What Comes Next

Comfort is a priority throughout, not an afterthought. Our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments — small things that make a stressful appointment easier to sit through. Se habla español, so language does not have to be one more barrier when you are already uncomfortable.

After treatment, we will go over home care specific to what we did, which may include:

  • How to manage soreness or swelling in the first day or two
  • What to eat and what to avoid while the area heals
  • Signs that should prompt a call back to our office
  • When to return for a follow-up, permanent restoration or replacement tooth

Many emergencies also reveal something worth addressing long-term. A cracked molar in someone who grinds at night may lead to a conversation about a night guard, and a sports injury is a good reason to have a custom sports mouth guard made. Keeping up with cleanings, exams, sealants and fluoride is still the most reliable way to avoid the next urgent visit.

Insurance, Financing and Getting Seen

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary benefits check so you know your coverage before treatment begins. Self-pay patients are welcome, and we accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. CareCredit financing is available, and for patients without insurance our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and under — no deductibles, no annual maximum, no waiting period, with exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments covered at 100% and 20% to 50% off other treatment.

If something hurts right now, call us and let us take a look today. Our five doctors and our team would be glad to get you out of pain and back to your day.
