Metal braces move teeth with steady, gentle pressure applied through brackets bonded to each tooth and a wire that connects them. That mechanical control is why traditional braces remain one of the most dependable ways to correct crowding, gaps, deep bites, open bites, crossbites and rotated teeth. In our Woodhaven office, orthodontic care is handled by Dr. Ila Sayed, a board-certified orthodontist, working alongside our general dentists so that cleanings, fillings and any other needs can be coordinated in the same practice.

Metal braces suit a wide range of situations, from a teenager whose permanent teeth have come in crowded to an adult who has lived for years with a bite that never quite settled. We treat both children and adults, and because our practice sees patients of all ages, we can follow a child's growth over time and begin orthodontic treatment when the timing makes sense rather than rushing it.

Metal braces are often the right choice when tooth movement is complex. Brackets stay fixed to the teeth, so they work around the clock without depending on a patient remembering to wear anything. For families where compliance with removable trays would be a daily struggle, that reliability matters. We also offer clear aligners and Invisalign, and part of your consultation is an honest conversation about which approach fits your bite, your schedule and your preferences. If you began treatment somewhere else and have moved to the Downriver area, we accept orthodontic transfer patients, and we provide retainers for patients who completed treatment at another practice.

Treatment starts with a complimentary consultation. We examine your teeth and bite, review records, and talk through what braces can realistically accomplish in your case, roughly how long it may take, and what the visit schedule looks like. You will leave understanding the plan before anything is bonded to your teeth.

On the day braces go on, the teeth are cleaned and prepared, brackets are bonded in place, and the archwire is seated and secured. It is not a painful appointment, though teeth usually feel tender for a few days afterward as they begin to shift. From there, you will come in periodically for adjustments, when wires are changed or tightened and progress is checked. Each adjustment is brief, and we will tell you what changed and what we are working toward next. Comfort is something we take seriously throughout: blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments are available at every visit, and Spanish-speaking patients will find staff who can explain treatment clearly — se habla español.

Living With Braces and Caring for Your Results

Daily care becomes more detailed with brackets and wires in place, but it is very manageable once the routine settles in. Brushing around each bracket and cleaning between teeth keeps the gums healthy and prevents staining around the brackets. Our hygienists can show you exactly where plaque tends to collect and which tools help. Keeping up with regular cleanings and exams during orthodontic treatment is one of the best things you can do for the final result.

A few habits make the months go more smoothly:

  • Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods that can loosen brackets or bend wires
  • Brush after meals and clean between teeth daily around the appliance
  • Keep your regular cleaning and exam appointments while in treatment
  • Wear a sports mouth guard if you play contact sports
  • Call us promptly about a loose bracket, poking wire or any discomfort

When the braces come off, teeth need help staying where they were moved. Retainers hold the correction in place while the bone and ligaments around each tooth stabilize. Wearing your retainer as directed is the difference between results that last and teeth that gradually drift back. Our on-site dental lab makes and adjusts appliances here, which means retainer fittings, relines and repairs are handled in-house rather than shipped out and waited on.

Paying for Braces

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and will run a complimentary benefits check so you know what your plan covers before you commit. Orthodontic claims from our office are filed as a general practitioner. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

CareCredit financing is available for patients who prefer to spread payments out. For families without dental insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for ages 18 and up and $99 a year for ages 17 and under, with no annual maximum, no deductibles, no waiting period and no pre-authorizations. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments a year at 100%, plus 20% to 50% off other treatment.

If you are considering braces for yourself or your child, we would be glad to meet you. Call our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven to schedule your free consultation — we welcome patients from Woodhaven, Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock.
