Scaling and Root Planing in Woodhaven

Bleeding when you brush, gums that pull away from your teeth, persistent bad breath, or a hygienist telling you your gum pockets measure deeper than they should — these are the signals that a regular cleaning is no longer enough. Scaling and root planing is the deep cleaning we use at our Woodhaven office on Allen Rd. to treat gum disease below the gumline, where a toothbrush and a routine polish simply cannot reach. It is one of the most common non-surgical periodontal treatments we provide, and for many of our patients it is the step that stops gum problems from turning into loose teeth and tooth loss.
Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar (calculus), and once it works its way under the gum, it creates a rough surface that bacteria cling to. The gum tissue responds with inflammation, the attachment between gum and tooth loosens, and a pocket forms. Deeper pockets trap more bacteria, and the cycle continues — sometimes quietly, without pain, until bone support is already affected.
Scaling and root planing interrupts that cycle. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and from inside the pocket. Root planing smooths the root surface so the gum tissue can reattach and so new buildup has less to hold onto. It is a careful, methodical procedure, which is why we typically treat one side or one quadrant of the mouth at a time rather than rushing through the whole mouth in a single pass. Local anesthetic keeps the area numb, and our comfort menu — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments — is available during longer appointments.
The patients we see for this treatment in Woodhaven arrive by several different paths. Some have not had a cleaning in years and know it; others come in for a routine exam and are surprised when probing reveals pockets that need attention. Some notice their gums bleed every time they floss, or that their teeth look longer as the gumline recedes. Others are referred to us by a spouse or parent who is already a patient here.
There are also patients preparing for other treatment. If you are considering dental implants, dentures, crowns or orthodontic treatment, healthy gums are the foundation — and we would rather address active gum disease first than build on an unstable base. Because we are a multi-doctor family practice treating all ages, we can coordinate that sequence under one roof, with our general dentists, our board-certified orthodontist and our oral surgery services working from the same records.
- Removal of hardened tartar from below the gumline, where brushing cannot reach
- Reduced gum inflammation, bleeding and tenderness
- Fresher breath from the removal of bacteria trapped in deep pockets
- Smoother root surfaces that allow gum tissue to tighten back around the tooth
- A non-surgical first approach before more involved periodontal procedures
- A healthier foundation for restorative, cosmetic or orthodontic work
What Your Appointments Look Like
We begin with a full exam and X-rays, including measuring the depth of the pockets around each tooth. That mapping tells us how extensive the problem is and which areas need the most attention. We also perform an oral cancer screening as part of our exam process, so nothing goes unnoticed while we are evaluating your tissue.
Treatment itself is usually split across one or more visits depending on how many areas are involved. We numb the area, clean thoroughly beneath the gumline with hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, and smooth the root surfaces. Afterward, it is normal for gums to feel tender and for teeth to be temporarily sensitive to hot and cold. We will go over specific home care instructions with you — gentle brushing, rinsing, and a realistic flossing routine you will actually keep up. Most patients then move onto periodontal maintenance, a more frequent cleaning schedule that keeps pockets from redeveloping. Our hygienist re-measures at those visits so we can see whether the tissue is responding.
