Oral Cancer Screening in Trenton

A Trenton patient comes in for a routine cleaning and mentions a sore spot on the side of the tongue that has been there a few weeks. It doesn't hurt much. It hasn't changed much. That's exactly the kind of thing we want to look at — and exactly why we include an oral cancer screening as part of the exams we perform at our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, a short drive from Trenton.
An oral cancer screening is a focused visual and tactile examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth. We look at the tongue — top, underside, and both edges — along with the floor of the mouth, the roof, the inside of the cheeks and lips, the gums, the back of the throat, and the tonsil area. We also feel along the jaw and neck for lumps or swollen lymph nodes, and we check that the tissues move and feel the way healthy tissue should.
What we're looking for are changes: white or red patches, sores that haven't healed, thickened areas, rough or crusted spots, unexplained bleeding, numbness, persistent hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing. Many of these findings turn out to be harmless — a cheek bite, an irritated spot from a denture edge, a canker sore. The point of screening is not to alarm anyone. It's to notice small changes early, document them, and follow up so nothing gets overlooked. Our team includes Dr. Sophia Elmuradi, a general dentist who is also a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, which means soft-tissue evaluation is a genuine area of depth in our practice.
Essentially every adult patient is a candidate, and we fold the screening into regular dental exams rather than treating it as an extra errand. That said, some people have more reason to be consistent about it. Tobacco use in any form, heavy alcohol use, prior HPV exposure, significant sun exposure affecting the lips, and a personal or family history of cancer all raise the importance of routine checks. Age matters too — risk generally increases as we get older.
We also screen patients who wear dentures or partials, since tissue underneath an appliance isn't visible day to day, and patients who have noticed something themselves and want a professional opinion. If you're a Trenton resident who hasn't seen a dentist in several years, this is one of the quieter reasons to come back in. We see patients of all ages and welcome new patients without a referral.
What the Visit Looks Like
The screening itself takes only a few minutes and is typically done during your cleaning and exam appointment with one of our five doctors. There are no needles, no dyes you have to swallow, and no recovery time. We'll ask about any symptoms you've noticed, how long they've been present, and whether anything has changed.
Here's what you can generally expect:
- A review of your health history, including tobacco and alcohol use
- A visual inspection of all soft tissues in the mouth, lips, and throat
- Gentle palpation of the neck, jawline, and floor of the mouth
- A discussion of anything we find and what it most likely is
- A plan for monitoring, re-checking, or referral if something warrants it
If we see an area we want to watch, we'll often ask you back in about two weeks to see whether it has resolved on its own — many irritations do. If a finding persists or looks suspicious, we'll discuss next steps with you directly, including referral for a biopsy or further evaluation. You'll leave knowing exactly what we saw and what happens next.
Aftercare and Staying on Schedule
There's no aftercare in the usual sense — you go right back to your day. What matters afterward is consistency and self-awareness. We encourage patients to check their own mouths occasionally in a mirror and to call us about any sore, patch, or lump that lasts longer than two weeks. We offer emergency appointments and can usually get you seen quickly.
Keeping your regular cleaning schedule is the simplest way to make sure screenings happen. Our hygienists and doctors see the same mouths over time, which makes it easier to notice what's new.
