Oral Cancer Screening in Riverview

Oral Cancer Screening in Riverview

An oral cancer screening takes only a few minutes, yet it is one of the most valuable parts of a routine visit. During every comprehensive exam at our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, we look carefully at the soft tissues of the mouth, throat, lips, tongue and neck for changes that a patient would be unlikely to notice on their own. For our Riverview patients, that means a short drive turns into both a cleaning and a thorough head-and-neck check in the same appointment.

Screening is a visual and physical examination of the tissues in and around the mouth. We check the roof and floor of the mouth, the inside of the cheeks, the gums, the back of the throat, and the top, sides and underside of the tongue. We also feel along the jaw and neck for lumps, swelling or firm areas in the lymph nodes, and we ask about symptoms you may have brushed off — a sore that has not healed, a rough patch, hoarseness, numbness, or trouble swallowing.

What makes this worthwhile is timing. Changes in oral tissue often appear in places that are hard to see in a bathroom mirror, and in the early stages they usually do not hurt. A painless spot is exactly the kind of thing people wait on. Because our Riverview patients tend to see us on a regular cleaning schedule, we have the advantage of comparison: our hygienists and doctors are looking at the same mouth over time and can notice when something is new or has changed shape, color or texture. Our team includes Dr. Sophia Elmuradi, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, which means questions about soft-tissue findings can be discussed in-house.

Every adult patient should be screened, and we fold the screening into routine exams rather than treating it as an add-on. Some situations raise the value of consistent screening, and we talk through them openly rather than making assumptions about anyone's habits.

  • Patients who currently use or previously used tobacco in any form, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco
  • Patients who drink alcohol regularly, particularly in combination with tobacco
  • Anyone with a persistent sore, white or red patch, lump, or thickened area that has lasted more than two weeks
  • Denture wearers, since appliances can cover tissue that needs to be seen without them in place
  • Patients with a personal or family history of cancer, or who have noticed hoarseness, ear pain on one side, or a change in how their bite feels
  • Adults who have gone several years without a dental exam

Teenagers and younger patients are examined too during their visits, since we see children from age one through the teen years. The screening itself does not change much by age — it is a careful look and feel, performed by a general dentist or hygienist who knows what healthy tissue should look like.

What the Appointment Looks Like

We start by reviewing your health history and any concerns you have noticed. If you wear complete or partial dentures, we ask you to remove them so the tissue underneath can be examined. Then we work systematically: lips, cheeks, gums, palate, floor of the mouth, tongue on all surfaces, and the throat, followed by palpating the jaw and neck. Gauze helps us hold and rotate the tongue so the sides and underside are fully visible.

Most of the time, we find nothing of concern and tell you so before you leave. If we do see something, we explain what we are looking at in plain language and discuss next steps, which may include taking photographs and asking you to return in about two weeks so we can see whether the area has resolved on its own. Many spots are irritation from a sharp tooth, a rubbing denture or a cheek bite, and our on-site dental lab can adjust or reline an appliance that is causing a sore. Aftercare is simple: there is nothing to recover from, and we ask that you check your own mouth monthly and call us about anything that lingers.
