Sedation Dentistry in Riverview

Dental anxiety keeps a lot of people from getting care they already know they need — a cracked molar, a cleaning that's years overdue, wisdom teeth that have been aching for months. Sedation dentistry solves that problem directly. At our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, we offer both nitrous oxide and IV sedation so patients from Riverview can get treatment done comfortably instead of postponing it one more year.
Sedation dentistry means using medication to help you stay relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. It isn't a substitute for local anesthetic — we still numb the area being worked on — but it changes how the appointment feels. Tension drops, time passes faster, and procedures that once felt overwhelming become manageable.
We offer two options. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is breathed in through a small nose mask. It takes effect within minutes, keeps you fully awake and able to respond, and wears off almost as quickly once the mask comes off. Most people who use nitrous can drive themselves home and go back to work or school the same day. It suits mild to moderate nervousness, a sensitive gag reflex, or patients who simply want to take the edge off a filling, a deep cleaning, or a longer restorative visit.
IV sedation is a deeper level of relaxation delivered through a vein in the arm or hand. It works faster and goes further than nitrous, and many patients remember little about the procedure afterward. We generally discuss IV sedation for longer or more involved appointments — surgical extractions, wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement, bone grafting — or for patients whose anxiety is severe enough that nitrous alone isn't enough. IV sedation requires a responsible adult to drive you home.
Riverview patients come to us for sedation in a wide range of situations. Some have avoided the dentist for a decade and need several things addressed at once. Others have a strong gag reflex, difficulty staying numb, trouble sitting still for long appointments, or a past experience that made dental visits hard. Parents bring children who need treatment but can't yet tolerate it comfortably — our team treats patients from age one through adulthood, including children with special healthcare needs.
Candidacy depends on your health history, the medications you take, and the procedure planned. That's why sedation always starts with a conversation, not an assumption. We offer a complimentary consultation, which is a practical way for Riverview residents to ask questions, review options, and get a treatment plan before committing to anything. With five doctors on staff — general dentists, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, and a board-certified orthodontist — we can coordinate sedation around surgery, restorative work, or ongoing care without sending you across town.
What to Expect Before, During, and After
Your sedation appointment follows a clear sequence, and we go over each step with you in advance so there are no surprises.
- Consultation and review: we discuss your medical history, medications, anxiety level, and the procedure planned, then recommend nitrous oxide or IV sedation.
- Pre-appointment instructions: we tell you whether to eat beforehand, what to wear, and whether you need a driver.
- During treatment: we monitor you throughout, and local anesthetic is still used so the treatment area stays numb.
- Recovery: nitrous wears off within minutes in the chair; IV sedation requires rest at home for the remainder of the day with an adult present.
- Follow-up: we provide written aftercare instructions and remain available if questions come up.
Comfort doesn't stop with the medication. Our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments — small things that make a real difference during a longer visit. Our in-house dental lab also shortens treatment time, since crowns, dentures, night guards, relines, and repairs are made and adjusted on site. Fewer appointments means fewer sedation visits for Riverview patients who need multiple restorations.
Insurance, Financing, and Getting Started
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and self-pay patients, and we'll run a complimentary benefits check so you know where you stand before treatment begins. We accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, and CareCredit financing is available for patients who prefer to spread payments out.
If you don't have dental insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for ages 18 and up and $99 a year for ages 17 and under. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments a year at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment — no annual maximum, no deductibles, no waiting period, no pre-authorizations.
We also see emergencies and welcome Spanish-speaking patients. Se habla español. Call to schedule a complimentary consultation and we'll help you decide which sedation option fits.
