Bone Grafting in Flat Rock

Bone Grafting in Flat Rock

If you've been told you don't have enough bone for a dental implant, or you're facing an extraction and want to keep your options open, bone grafting is usually the answer. It's one of the most common procedures we perform for patients from Flat Rock, and it often makes the difference between a straightforward implant later and a much more complicated situation. Our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven is a short drive for Flat Rock families, and because we handle oral surgery, implants, and restorative work under one roof, you aren't sent across town to a separate specialist to get started.

Bone grafting adds bone material to an area of the jaw where bone has thinned, shrunk, or been lost. The jawbone depends on tooth roots for stimulation. When a tooth is removed or lost, the bone in that spot begins to resorb — it narrows and loses height over months and years. Advanced gum disease can also destroy the bone that supports teeth, and long-term denture wear can accelerate the same process.

The graft acts as a scaffold. Over a healing period, your body replaces and integrates the grafted material with your own new bone, rebuilding a ridge that's wide and tall enough to support an implant or hold a denture more securely. For many Flat Rock patients, grafting is done at the same appointment as an extraction — placing graft material directly into the empty socket to preserve the site before it has a chance to collapse. That approach, often called socket preservation, is one of the simplest and most predictable forms of grafting we do.

Most people who need a graft fall into one of a few groups. Some are planning a dental implant and were told the bone isn't thick enough to hold it. Some are having a tooth extracted and want the site protected for future tooth replacement. Others have lost bone to gum disease and need support rebuilt around remaining teeth. And some long-time denture wearers find their ridge has flattened to the point that nothing fits comfortably anymore.

Candidacy depends on your overall health, the condition of your gums, and how much bone is missing and where. We start with a complimentary consultation, which includes an exam and imaging so we can see the actual bone volume rather than guessing from the surface. If active gum disease is present, we typically treat that first with scaling and root planing or periodontal therapy, since a graft placed into infected tissue won't heal well. If grafting isn't the right path, we'll tell you that and talk through alternatives such as mini implants, bridges, or dentures.

What the Procedure and Recovery Involve

Bone grafting is an outpatient procedure done right in our office. The area is thoroughly numbed, and nitrous oxide sedation or IV sedation is available if you'd rather be more relaxed. We make a small opening in the gum tissue, place the graft material where bone is needed, and close the site with sutures. A socket preservation graft at the time of an extraction usually adds only a short amount of time to the visit.

Here's what Flat Rock patients can generally expect:

  • Mild to moderate soreness and swelling for the first few days, managed with cold compresses and the medication instructions we provide
  • Soft foods and avoiding chewing directly on the graft site while it heals
  • Gentle oral hygiene around the area, with specific rinsing instructions from us
  • No smoking or drinking through straws, since suction and smoke interfere with healing
  • Follow-up visits so we can check the site and confirm the graft is integrating
  • A healing period of several months before an implant is placed, depending on the graft

Because we're a multi-doctor practice with general dentists, an oral and maxillofacial pathologist on staff, and a board-certified orthodontist, your follow-up care stays in the same building. We also keep time open for emergency appointments, so if something feels wrong during recovery, you can reach us quickly rather than waiting.

Paying for Your Graft

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary benefits check, so you'll know what your plan covers before anything is scheduled. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

For treatment spread across several appointments — a graft, then an implant, then a crown — CareCredit financing lets you pay over time. If you don't have dental insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for patients 17 and under, with no deductibles, no waiting period, no annual maximum, and no pre-authorizations. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments at 100%, plus 20% to 50% off other treatment.
