Metal braces move teeth with steady, predictable pressure — brackets bonded to each tooth, a wire connecting them, and small adjustments made over time. That mechanical reliability is why traditional metal braces remain a first choice for crowded teeth, gaps, rotated teeth, and bite problems that need more control than other methods can offer. For Flat Rock families, that treatment is available at our Woodhaven office at 22500 Allen Rd., where our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Ila Sayed, works alongside our general dentists under one roof.

Braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance. Brackets are bonded to the front of the teeth and connected by an archwire held in place with small elastic or metal ties. The wire carries a planned shape, and as it works back toward that shape it guides teeth into better position. Because the brackets stay put between visits, treatment continues around the clock without depending on whether an appliance is being worn.

We offer metal braces specifically, and they handle a wide range of situations — significant crowding, spacing, teeth that need to be rotated or uprighted, and bite corrections that call for elastics. Metal brackets are strong, which matters for active teenagers and for adults whose cases need more force applied over a longer stretch. We treat both children and adults, and we also accept orthodontic transfer patients, so Flat Rock residents who started braces elsewhere and moved, or whose previous office is no longer convenient, can continue care here rather than starting over.

Candidacy starts with a conversation and an exam, and we offer a complimentary consultation for that purpose. Dr. Sayed evaluates how the teeth fit together, how much room is available, the health of the gums and supporting bone, and — for younger patients — how growth and remaining baby teeth factor in. Because we see patients from age one through adulthood, we can begin watching a Flat Rock child's bite long before braces are appropriate and start treatment at the right time rather than an arbitrary one.

Healthy teeth and gums come first. If a cavity, gum inflammation, or a tooth that needs removal shows up during the exam, we can address it here. Our general dentists handle fillings, cleanings and gum disease treatment, and our practice provides simple and surgical extractions when crowding requires space. That means a Flat Rock patient usually isn't sent across town for preliminary work before orthodontics can begin.

What Treatment Looks Like, Visit by Visit

Placement day is straightforward. The teeth are cleaned and prepared, brackets are bonded one at a time, and the first archwire is placed and secured. There's no drilling and no numbing involved. Teeth often feel tender for a few days afterward as they begin to move; soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief are typically enough to get through it.

After that, visits happen periodically for adjustments — changing or tightening the wire, replacing ties, and adding elastics if the bite needs correcting. Each appointment is short compared to the first one. Here's what Flat Rock patients can generally expect across the course of treatment:

  • A complimentary consultation and exam before any commitment
  • Bonding appointment to place brackets and the first wire
  • Regular adjustment visits to progress the wire sequence
  • Routine cleanings and exams continuing alongside orthodontic care
  • Removal of brackets, followed by retainers to hold the result

We also provide retainers for patients who were treated elsewhere, which is useful if an old retainer breaks or no longer fits.

Caring for Braces and Protecting the Result

Brushing and flossing take more time with brackets in place, because food and plaque collect around them. We keep patients on a regular cleaning schedule with our hygienist throughout treatment, and fluoride treatments help protect enamel around the brackets. Hard, sticky and chewy foods are the usual culprits behind broken brackets — and when something does come loose, we offer emergency dental appointments so a Flat Rock patient isn't waiting weeks with a poking wire. If sports are part of the routine, we provide sports mouth guards, which our in-house lab makes and adjusts on site.

Retention is not optional. Teeth drift after braces come off, and wearing retainers as directed is what keeps the correction. Our lab fabricates and repairs appliances here, so adjustments and replacements don't require an outside turnaround.

Paying for Braces

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file orthodontic claims as a general practitioner. We'll run a complimentary benefits check so you know what your plan covers before deciding anything.

For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and under, with exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments covered at 100% and 20% to 50% off other treatment — no deductibles, waiting periods or annual maximum. CareCredit financing is available, and we accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Se habla español.
