Sleep Apnea Treatment in Flat Rock

Sleep Apnea Treatment in Flat Rock

If you wake up tired no matter how early you went to bed, or your partner has started sleeping in another room because of the snoring, you are dealing with something more than a bad night. Many of our Flat Rock patients come to us after years of loud snoring, morning headaches, dry mouth, or a CPAP machine sitting unused in a closet. We make oral appliances for sleep apnea at our Allen Road office in Woodhaven, a short drive from Flat Rock, and we build and adjust those appliances in our own on-site dental lab.

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax during sleep and block the airway, over and over, all night long. Breathing pauses, the body briefly rouses to restart it, and deep sleep never really arrives. That is why the daytime symptoms — exhaustion, irritability, trouble concentrating, dozing off on the drive home — often feel bigger than the nighttime ones.

Dentists have a practical role here because the jaw and tongue sit at the center of the problem. A sleep apnea oral appliance is a custom-fitted device, similar in size to a sports mouth guard, that holds the lower jaw in a slightly forward position while you sleep. That small change helps keep the airway open. It is quiet, it needs no electricity or hoses, and it travels easily — a real advantage for Flat Rock patients who work night shifts, travel for work, or simply never adjusted to wearing a mask.

Oral appliance therapy tends to suit people with snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and people who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea but cannot tolerate CPAP. Diagnosis itself comes from a sleep physician and a sleep study; we work from that diagnosis rather than replacing it. If you have never been tested but recognize the symptoms, tell us at your visit and we can talk through next steps.

Candidacy also depends on your mouth. You need enough healthy teeth to anchor the appliance, reasonably stable gums, and a jaw joint that tolerates a forward position. Because we are a full-service general practice, we can address what we find — a cracked tooth, gum disease, an old crown that needs replacing — before fitting an appliance, instead of sending you somewhere else. Patients who grind their teeth often ask about this too, and we make custom night guards as well, so we can sort out which device fits your situation.

Here is what oral appliance therapy often offers the right candidate:

  • A quiet, compact alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP
  • Less snoring, which helps a sleeping partner as much as the patient
  • Easy travel and no cords, masks, or filters to manage
  • A custom fit made and adjusted in our in-house lab
  • Ongoing follow-up with the same team that handles your regular dental care

How We Fit Your Appliance, Step by Step

We start with a complimentary consultation. We talk through your sleep history, your symptoms, any sleep study results you have, and what you have already tried. Then we examine your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw joint, and take X-rays as needed, so we know the appliance will have a stable foundation.

When we move forward, we take precise impressions or scans and record how your jaw moves. Those records go to our on-site lab, which means fewer delays and easier adjustments than sending work out. At the delivery visit we seat the appliance, check the fit, and show you how to insert, remove, and clean it. Most people need a short adjustment period — mild jaw soreness or extra saliva in the first week or two is common — and we fine-tune the jaw position gradually in follow-up visits until you and your physician are satisfied with the results.

Aftercare and Staying Comfortable

Ongoing care is straightforward. Rinse and brush the appliance daily, let it dry, and bring it to your regular cleanings so we can inspect it for wear and check that your bite still feels right. Because the lab is here, relines, repairs, and adjustments usually do not mean long waits. We also keep an eye on your bite over time, since appliances that reposition the jaw can shift things slightly.

Comfort matters to us throughout. Blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments are available at any appointment, and we see all ages. Se habla español.

Insurance, Membership, and Payment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary benefits check so you know where you stand before treatment. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

For Flat Rock patients without dental insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and younger. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments a year at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment — no deductibles, no annual maximum, no waiting period, and no pre-authorizations. CareCredit financing is available as well, so larger treatment can be spread over time. Call us and we will walk you through the numbers before you commit.
