Scaling and Root Planing in Flat Rock

Scaling and Root Planing in Flat Rock

Bleeding when you brush, gums that feel tender or look puffy, breath that doesn't improve no matter how often you rinse — these are the signs that bring many Flat Rock patients into our Allen Road office. Often a routine cleaning isn't enough at that point, because plaque and tartar have worked their way beneath the gumline where a toothbrush can't reach. That's where scaling and root planing comes in. It's a deep cleaning treatment for gum disease, and for most people it's the turning point between gums that keep getting worse and gums that start healing.

Scaling and root planing is a two-part procedure. Scaling removes hardened tartar and bacterial buildup from the tooth surface and from inside the pockets that form between the gum and the root. Root planing then smooths the root surfaces so bacteria have fewer rough spots to cling to and the gum tissue can reattach more closely to the tooth. Think of a standard cleaning as maintenance above the gumline, and scaling and root planing as treatment below it.

We recommend it when gum disease has progressed past the earliest stage. During an exam, we measure the depth of the pockets around your teeth, look at the health and color of your gum tissue, and review X-rays for signs of bone loss. If those pockets are deeper than normal, if your gums bleed easily, or if tartar is visible below the gumline, deep cleaning is usually the right next step. Good candidates include patients who have gone a long time between cleanings, people managing conditions that make gum inflammation worse, and patients preparing for restorative work such as crowns, implants or dentures — healthy gums make every one of those treatments more predictable.

Flat Rock patients are a short drive from our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, and we see this as a neighboring community rather than an outside referral area. We're a multi-doctor family practice with five doctors and dental hygienists on staff, which means we can often fit gum treatment into a schedule that works around work, school and family routines instead of stretching it out over months.

Because we treat all ages under one roof, Flat Rock families don't have to split appointments between offices. A parent can have scaling and root planing done while their children are seen for cleanings, sealants or orthodontic checks. We also offer same-day emergency appointments, so if gum pain or a loose, sore tooth is what prompted the call, we can take a look quickly rather than putting you on a long waitlist. What the Appointment Is Like

We numb the area thoroughly before we begin, so the procedure itself should feel like pressure and vibration rather than pain. Treatment is usually split by section of the mouth — commonly one half or one quadrant at a time — which keeps each visit manageable and lets you leave with part of your mouth fully comfortable. Depending on how much buildup is present, you may need two or more visits.

Comfort is a priority throughout. Our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments, and nitrous oxide sedation is available for patients who feel anxious about longer appointments.

  • Gentle removal of tartar and bacteria from below the gumline
  • Smoother root surfaces so gums can reattach and pockets shrink
  • Less bleeding, swelling and gum tenderness over time
  • Improvement in persistent bad breath caused by bacteria in the pockets
  • A stable foundation for fillings, crowns, implants and dentures

Aftercare and Keeping Your Results

For a few days afterward, gums may feel sore and teeth may be temporarily sensitive to hot and cold. Soft foods, warm salt-water rinses and gentle brushing around the treated areas help during that window. We'll go over exactly how to care for the area and what to watch for before you leave.

The follow-up matters as much as the treatment. We'll re-measure your pockets to see how the tissue has responded, and most patients then move onto periodontal maintenance — cleanings on a more frequent schedule than the standard twice a year. Gum disease is managed rather than cured, so staying on that rhythm is what protects the progress you've made.

Paying for Treatment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary insurance benefits check, so you'll know your coverage before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

If you don't have insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for ages 18 and up and $99 for ages 17 and younger, with no deductibles, no annual maximum, no waiting period and no pre-authorizations. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment. CareCredit financing is also available, and consultations are complimentary.
