Pediatric Dentistry
We care for kids from age one through the teen years, including children with special healthcare needs.
A toddler sits on a parent's lap in our Woodhaven office, more interested in the ceiling than the toothbrush, while a nervous four-year-old counts teeth out loud in the next chair. These are ordinary mornings for us, and they're exactly the kind of visits children's dentistry is built around. We see kids from age 1 through the teen years, and our goal at every age is the same: make the dental chair a familiar, unscary place long before anything complicated comes up.
Children's dental care is preventive care first. For a one- or two-year-old, a visit may be little more than a knee-to-knee look at the gums and first teeth, a gentle brushing demonstration for the parent, and a conversation about bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers and what to do if a tooth gets bumped. As children grow, visits expand to include a full dental exam, professional cleaning, X-rays when appropriate, and fluoride treatment to strengthen developing enamel.
One of the most useful tools for school-age kids is dental sealants — a thin protective coating applied to the deep grooves of back molars, where food and bacteria tend to collect and brushing can't always reach. When a cavity does form, we restore the tooth with tooth-colored fillings. Because we're a multi-doctor family practice treating all ages, a child who needs more involved care doesn't have to be sent across town: extractions, wisdom teeth removal, braces and Invisalign with our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Ila Sayed, and sports mouth guards made in our on-site lab are all available under one roof.
Families come to us for pediatric visits for a range of reasons, and each one looks a little different. Some are bringing a child in for a true first visit around the first birthday or first tooth. Some are switching from another office and want the whole family — parents, grandparents and kids — on the same schedule at the same address. Others arrive because a tooth hurts, a filling came out, or a front tooth got chipped on the playground; we offer emergency dental appointments, including same-day visits, for exactly those moments.
We also treat children with special healthcare needs, and we welcome parents to tell us ahead of time what helps their child feel settled — sensory sensitivities, communication preferences, whether a shorter appointment works better, or whether a parent should stay right alongside the chair. For children who feel anxious, nitrous oxide sedation is available to help them relax while staying awake and responsive, and our comfort menu of blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments applies to our youngest patients just as much as our adults. Se habla español, so Spanish-speaking families can ask questions and get answers comfortably.
Aftercare, Habits and Long-Term Results
Most children's appointments require no recovery at all — kids go back to school or daycare the same day. After a filling or an extraction, we'll give parents specific instructions on eating, numbness and soreness, and we're a phone call away if anything seems off. After a fluoride treatment, we'll let you know how soon your child can eat and drink normally.
The lasting results come from what happens between visits. Twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing once teeth touch, limiting sugary drinks and sipping habits, and keeping to a regular cleaning and exam schedule are what keep small problems small. Our hygienists spend real time coaching kids on technique in language they understand, and we're glad to repeat that coaching as often as it takes. Routine visits also let us watch how permanent teeth are coming in and flag bite or spacing concerns early, when orthodontic options are at their widest.
Insurance, Membership and Payment
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and we file pediatric claims as a General Practitioner. We're happy to run a complimentary insurance benefits check so you know what's covered before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay families and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
For families without dental insurance, our in-house membership plan is often the simplest path:
- $99 per year for ages 17 and younger, $199 per year for ages 18 and older
- Exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments per year covered at 100%
- 20% to 50% off other treatment
- No annual maximum, no deductibles, no waiting period, no pre-authorizations
CareCredit financing is available for larger treatment plans, and we offer a complimentary consultation if you'd like to meet us before committing.
If your child is due for a first visit, a cleaning, or care you've been putting off, we'd love to meet your family at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven — and we're glad to see patients from Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock as well. Call us to schedule.
