Wisdom Teeth Removal in Woodhaven

A high school senior comes in for a routine cleaning, and the X-rays tell a story the patient hasn't felt yet: two lower wisdom teeth angled sideways, pressing against the molars in front of them. There's no pain today, but there will be. That scenario plays out in our Woodhaven office more often than almost any other surgical conversation we have — and catching it early is exactly why we take those images.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars, the last four teeth to come in, usually between the late teens and mid-twenties. For some people they erupt straight, fully, and with enough room to be cleaned and used like any other molar. For many others, the jaw simply doesn't have the space. The tooth stays partly or fully trapped under the gum and bone — impacted — or it pushes in at an angle that crowds neighboring teeth.
That's when removal becomes the recommendation. An impacted or partially erupted wisdom tooth creates a pocket that a toothbrush can't reach, which invites decay, gum infection, and inflammation around the tissue flap. Pressure from an angled third molar can also damage the healthy second molar beside it. Removing the tooth resolves the source rather than repeatedly treating the symptoms. We handle oral surgery, including both simple and surgical extractions, right here at our Allen Road office, and we accept patients without a referral — so Woodhaven families don't have to start over somewhere unfamiliar.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. We evaluate each one individually using an exam and imaging, and we talk through what we see with you before anything is scheduled. A complimentary consultation makes that conversation easy to have, whether you're a longtime patient or coming in specifically to get a second opinion on a recommendation you received elsewhere.
Common reasons we recommend removal include:
- Pain, swelling, or recurring infection around a partially erupted wisdom tooth
- Impaction against the second molar, with risk of damage or decay
- Not enough room in the jaw for the tooth to erupt and function
- Difficulty keeping the area clean, leading to gum disease or cavities
- Crowding concerns, including coordination with braces or Invisalign treatment
We see patients of all ages, so this applies to teenagers whose third molars are just forming as well as adults in their thirties, forties, or beyond who have lived with a problem tooth for years. Because we have a board-certified orthodontist on staff, we can also coordinate timing when wisdom teeth factor into an orthodontic plan.
What the Procedure and Recovery Involve
On the day of surgery, we numb the area thoroughly and confirm you're comfortable before we begin. A simple extraction is used when the tooth has erupted and can be lifted out whole. A surgical extraction is used for impacted teeth — a small opening is made in the gum, and the tooth may be sectioned into pieces to remove it with as little disruption to the surrounding bone as possible. The site is then cleaned and closed. Most appointments are shorter than patients expect.
Comfort is a priority throughout. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation dentistry for patients who feel anxious or who are having several teeth removed at once, and our comfort menu — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, refreshments — is available during your visit. If a wisdom tooth flares up suddenly, we also offer emergency dental appointments.
Afterward, you'll go home with specific instructions: bite on gauze to control bleeding, use cold compresses, stick to soft foods, avoid straws and smoking so the clot stays in place, and rest for the first day or two. Swelling typically peaks early and then eases. We'll tell you exactly what's normal, what isn't, and how to reach us if something concerns you. In cases where bone volume needs support for future restorative work, bone grafting is something we can discuss at the same visit.
