Maybe it's been a year or two since your last checkup, or maybe a tooth has started feeling sensitive to cold and you're not sure whether it's serious. Either way, a dental exam is where the answers start. At our office on Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, an exam is a careful look at your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth, paired with a conversation about what you're noticing and what you want for your smile. It's the appointment that tells us whether you need nothing more than a cleaning, or whether something small is worth addressing now before it turns into something bigger.
An exam is a head-to-mouth assessment, not just a quick peek at your teeth. We check each tooth for decay, cracks, worn edges and failing old fillings. We look at the health of your gums, since bleeding, tenderness or pockets around the teeth can be early signs of gum disease. We include an oral cancer screening, examining your tongue, cheeks, palate and throat tissues. We also pay attention to how your teeth come together, because an uneven bite can explain headaches, chipped enamel or a night guard that never quite felt right.
X-rays often come into play, since a large share of dental problems start between the teeth or below the gumline where they can't be seen directly. With our five doctors on staff, including general dentists, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist and a board-certified orthodontist, findings that reach beyond routine care can be discussed in-house rather than sent somewhere else. Dr. Ghannam, who earned his DDS from the University of Michigan in 1985, leads the team.
Dental exams suit just about everyone. We see patients of all ages, from a child's very first visit around age one through the teen years and well into adulthood, and we treat children with special healthcare needs. For a young patient, an exam is often about counting teeth, checking growth and deciding whether sealants or fluoride make sense. For an adult who's been away from the dentist for a while, it's about getting an honest baseline without judgment.
The exam is also the natural starting point for bigger decisions. Patients thinking about dentures, traditional or mini implants, veneers, whitening, braces or Invisalign need a healthy foundation first, and the exam tells us what that foundation looks like. If you're dealing with pain, swelling or a broken tooth, we offer same-day emergency appointments, and the exam narrows down the cause quickly. We also evaluate patients interested in sleep apnea oral appliances and custom night or sports guards.
What makes the visit easier for many people is comfort. Blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments are all available, and nitrous oxide and IV sedation are options for patients who need them. Se habla español.
What Happens After Your Exam
Once we've finished looking, we sit down and explain what we found in plain language, including what's urgent, what can wait and what's simply worth watching. Many exams pair naturally with a cleaning from our hygienist, and if gum disease is present, we may recommend scaling and root planing followed by periodontal maintenance visits.
If restorative work is needed, our on-site dental lab is a real advantage. Crowns, dentures, night guards and other appliances are made and adjusted here, which means same-day crowns, same-day dentures, relines and repairs without long waits or shipping delays. Aftercare is straightforward: brush twice daily, clean between your teeth, and come back at the interval we recommend, typically every six months, so small changes stay small.
Paying for Your Visit
We want cost to be clear before treatment begins, not a surprise afterward. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary insurance benefits check so you know your coverage up front. Self-pay patients are welcome, and we take cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is often the most practical route:
- $199 per year for ages 18 and older; $99 per year for ages 17 and younger
- Exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments a year covered at 100%
- 20% to 50% off other treatment
- No annual maximum, no deductibles, no waiting period, no pre-authorizations
CareCredit financing is also available for larger treatment plans, and we offer new patient specials along with a complimentary consultation.
