Gum Contouring in Flat Rock

When you smile and see more gum than tooth — or notice that one tooth looks shorter than the one beside it — it can be hard to stop noticing. Plenty of our Flat Rock patients tell us their teeth are healthy, their cleanings go fine, and yet something about the way their smile frames up bothers them. Gum contouring is a straightforward way to address that. By reshaping the gum tissue along the edges of your teeth, we can even out an uneven gumline, reveal more of the natural tooth, and give your smile a balanced look without touching the healthy teeth themselves.
Gum contouring, sometimes called gum reshaping, is a procedure in which we carefully remove or resculpt a small amount of gum tissue so the tissue sits in a more even, flattering position around your teeth. It is a cosmetic dentistry treatment in most cases, though the same skills overlap with crown lengthening, which we also provide when more tooth structure needs to be exposed for a filling or a crown to fit properly.
People come to us for this for different reasons. Some have what is often described as a "gummy" smile, where the upper lip rises and shows a wide band of tissue. Others have a single tooth that looks stubby because the gum creeps too far down over it, which becomes especially noticeable next to a front tooth. Some patients finishing orthodontic treatment — braces or Invisalign with our board-certified orthodontist — find that their teeth are beautifully aligned but the gumline hasn't quite caught up. Gum contouring is often the finishing touch in those cases, and it pairs naturally with porcelain veneers, composite bonding, or whitening when a broader smile makeover is the goal.
Good candidates have healthy gums to begin with. If there is active gum disease, we treat that first with scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, or other gum disease treatment, because reshaping tissue that is inflamed or infected doesn't hold up well. During your complimentary consultation, we examine the gums and supporting bone, look at how your lip moves when you smile, and talk honestly about whether contouring alone will get you the result you want — or whether bonding, veneers, or gum grafting for recession would serve you better.
Candidacy also depends on your goals. We ask Flat Rock patients to bring photos or point to exactly what bothers them in the mirror. Sometimes a very small adjustment to one or two teeth makes the difference people are after. Other times the right answer is a combination of treatments. Because we are a multi-doctor family practice seeing patients of all ages, we can keep all of that planning under one roof rather than sending you somewhere else to finish the job.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
The appointment itself is usually shorter than people expect. We numb the area thoroughly, mark the new gumline, and reshape the tissue in small increments, checking symmetry as we go. You stay in control of your comfort throughout — tell us at any point and we'll pause.
- A complimentary consultation to review your gums, your smile line, and your goals
- Local anesthetic so the area is fully numb before we begin
- Careful, incremental reshaping with frequent checks for symmetry
- Nitrous oxide sedation or IV sedation available if dental anxiety is a concern
- Comfort menu options including blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments
- Clear written aftercare instructions and a follow-up to check healing
Aftercare is simple but worth following closely. Expect some tenderness for a few days. We generally recommend soft foods, lukewarm rather than hot drinks, and gentle brushing around the treated area while it heals. Avoid aggressive flossing or hard, crunchy foods near the site until we tell you the tissue has settled. If anything feels wrong — unusual bleeding, swelling that worsens, or pain that doesn't ease — call us. We keep room for emergency appointments and would much rather see you than have you wait it out.
