Oral Cancer Screening in Flat Rock

A Flat Rock patient comes in for a routine cleaning and mentions, almost in passing, that a sore spot on the side of the tongue has been there for a few weeks. It doesn't hurt much. It hasn't stopped them from eating. That kind of small, easy-to-dismiss detail is exactly what an oral cancer screening is designed to catch — and it's part of every comprehensive exam we perform at our office on Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, just a short drive for our Flat Rock neighbors.
An oral cancer screening is a careful visual and physical examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, head and neck. We look at your tongue — top, underside and both edges — along with the floor of the mouth, the roof, the inside of your cheeks and lips, your gums, your tonsil area and the back of the throat. We also feel along your jawline and neck for lumps, swelling or changes in the lymph nodes, and we check for areas that feel firm, rough or thickened rather than soft and smooth.
We're watching for red or white patches, sores that haven't healed, unexplained bleeding, numbness, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or a change in how your teeth or denture fit together. The screening itself is quick, painless and requires no needles, no drilling and no numbing. Most patients barely register it as a separate step, because we fold it into the exam appointment alongside your cleaning. Our team includes Dr. Sophia Elmuradi, a general dentist who is also a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist — a background focused specifically on diseases of the mouth and jaws.
Screening benefits every adult, but a few situations make regular checks especially worthwhile. Tobacco use of any kind, heavy alcohol use, significant sun exposure to the lips, and a personal or family history of cancer all raise the importance of consistent monitoring. Age matters too, which is why we build screening into routine visits for our adult patients from Flat Rock rather than treating it as an extra appointment to remember.
Some of the most common reasons Flat Rock patients end up having tissue examined closely include:
- A sore, ulcer or rough patch that hasn't healed within about two weeks
- A lump or thickened area in the cheek, lip, tongue or neck
- A denture or partial that has started rubbing or no longer seats the same way
- Persistent hoarseness, throat soreness or the feeling that something is caught
- A white or red patch noticed while brushing
- Numbness or tingling anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
We also see patients who simply haven't had an exam in several years and want a thorough look at everything. If that's you, our complimentary consultation is a straightforward way to start, and we'll tell you honestly what we see.
What Happens During and After Your Visit
Before we examine anything, we go over your health history — medications, tobacco and alcohol use, past biopsies, and any symptoms you've noticed, including how long they've been present. That context shapes what we're looking for. The examination follows, with gauze used to gently hold and move the tongue so every surface is visible. X-rays may be taken as part of your overall exam when appropriate.
If everything looks healthy, there's no aftercare at all — you go on with your day and we re-screen at your next checkup. If we find something that warrants attention, we explain exactly what we see and where. Often the next step is simply to re-examine the area in two weeks, since many sores from a cheek bite, a sharp filling edge or an irritating denture flange resolve on their own. When an irritant is the likely cause, we can address it directly: smoothing a rough tooth surface, or adjusting and relining an appliance in our on-site dental lab. When an area persists or looks suspicious, we discuss further evaluation with you clearly and without alarm.
Cost, Insurance and Getting Seen
Because screening is part of a routine exam, it's typically covered when your exam is covered. We accept all major PPO plans and will run a complimentary insurance benefits check so you know your coverage before you sit in the chair.
For Flat Rock patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for ages 18 and up and $99 for ages 17 and under. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments a year at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment — no deductibles, no waiting period and no annual maximum. We also offer CareCredit financing and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Se habla español, and same-day emergency appointments are available when something can't wait.
