Sedation Dentistry in Flat Rock

Sedation Dentistry in Flat Rock

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care, and it rarely goes away on its own — a postponed filling becomes a root canal, and a sore tooth becomes an emergency. For our patients from Flat Rock, sedation dentistry is the tool that breaks that cycle. We offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation at our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, a short drive from Flat Rock, so treatment you've been avoiding can finally happen in a way that feels manageable.

Sedation dentistry means using medication to help you stay calm, comfortable and relaxed while we work. It is not the same as numbing — local anesthetic blocks pain in a specific tooth, while sedation addresses the anxiety, the gag reflex, the soreness of holding your mouth open and the general dread that keeps people out of the chair. The two are often used together.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is inhaled through a small mask over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, leaves you awake and able to respond to us, and wears off quickly once the mask comes off. It suits mild to moderate nervousness, longer cleanings, fillings, and children or teens who need a little help holding still. IV sedation is delivered through a vein and produces a much deeper level of relaxation. Many patients remember little of the appointment. It is better suited to significant dental fear, extensive oral surgery such as wisdom teeth removal or surgical extractions, implant placement, or combining several procedures into one visit rather than spreading them over months.

Sedation is worth discussing if any of these sound like you or a family member in Flat Rock:

  • You feel real fear or panic about dental visits, or you have skipped care for years because of it
  • You have a strong gag reflex that makes X-rays, impressions or back-tooth work difficult
  • You need lengthy treatment, such as multiple extractions, implants or bone grafting, and would rather not sit through several separate appointments
  • You have trouble getting fully numb, or sounds and sensations bother you
  • Your child needs restorative work and has difficulty sitting still, including children with special healthcare needs

Candidacy depends on your health history, current medications and the treatment planned, which is why we review all of it before recommending an option. Some patients do beautifully with nitrous oxide alone; others are better served by IV sedation. We also treat all ages, so parents frequently ask about comfort options for a child and for themselves in the same conversation.

What the Appointment Looks Like

We start with a consultation — complimentary — to go over your concerns, examine the area, and talk honestly about which form of sedation fits. If IV sedation is planned, we review preparation instructions in advance, including arranging a responsible adult to drive you to and from our Woodhaven office and stay with you afterward. For nitrous oxide, no driver is typically needed, which makes it a practical choice for Flat Rock patients fitting an appointment into a workday.

During treatment we monitor you throughout. Comfort is a priority beyond the medication itself: our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments, and these are available whether or not you choose sedation. Afterward, nitrous oxide patients usually feel normal within a short time and can resume their day. IV sedation patients rest with us until we're satisfied they're ready, then go home to take it easy for the remainder of the day, following written post-operative instructions on eating, medication and activity. We'll let you know when to call us with questions, and we see emergency and follow-up concerns promptly.

Paying for Sedation and Treatment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and will run a complimentary benefits check so you know where you stand before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

If you don't have insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for ages 18 and up and $99 a year for ages 17 and under. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments a year at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment, and there is no annual maximum, no deductible, no waiting period and no pre-authorization. CareCredit financing is available as well for larger treatment plans.

Care for Flat Rock Families Under One Roof

Because our five doctors include general dentists, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist and a board-certified orthodontist, sedation can be paired with a wide range of care without sending you elsewhere — oral surgery, implants, root canals, crowns and dentures included. We accept oral surgery patients without a referral.

Our on-site dental lab fabricates and adjusts crowns, dentures, night guards and other appliances here, which means fewer trips from Flat Rock and, in many cases, same-day crowns or dentures. Se habla español. When you're ready to talk through your options, we'll listen first and plan from there.
