Teeth Whitening in Flat Rock

Coffee on the drive to work, tea in the afternoon, a glass of red wine with dinner — the everyday habits that make life enjoyable are also the ones that slowly dull the color of your teeth. Add in years of normal wear and the natural darkening that comes with age, and a smile can look tired even when the teeth themselves are perfectly healthy. Professional whitening is one of the simplest ways to change that, and for our Flat Rock patients it's often the first cosmetic step we talk about because it doesn't involve drilling, numbing, or altering tooth structure.

Teeth whitening uses a professional-strength peroxide gel to break up the stain molecules that have settled into the enamel and the layer of dentin beneath it. The structure of the tooth isn't changed — only the color. That's what separates professional whitening from abrasive "whitening" toothpastes, which mostly scrub surface film and can't reach the deeper discoloration that comes from decades of coffee, tobacco, or dark-colored foods.

We offer whitening in two forms at our Woodhaven office, a short drive from Flat Rock: in-office whitening and take-home whitening. In-office treatment is done in one visit, with your gums and lips protected while a stronger gel works on the teeth under our supervision. It's the better fit when you have a wedding, graduation, reunion, or job interview on the calendar and want results without a daily routine. Take-home whitening uses custom trays made to fit your teeth, with professional gel you apply yourself over a set number of days. It suits patients who prefer to go gradually, who have some sensitivity, or who want trays on hand to touch up a year or two down the road. Plenty of Flat Rock patients choose both: in-office to get there quickly, take-home trays to stay there.

Good candidates for whitening are patients with healthy teeth and gums and stains that come from food, drink, tobacco, or aging. Before we whiten anything, we do an exam — if there's active decay, a cracked filling, or gum inflammation, whitening gel can cause real discomfort, so we address those first. That's one reason whitening pairs naturally with a cleaning appointment.

Whitening also doesn't change the color of dental work. Crowns, bridges, veneers, and composite fillings stay the shade they were made, so if you have restorations on front teeth, we'll talk through sequencing — sometimes it makes sense to whiten first and then match new restorations to the lighter shade. Our on-site dental lab makes that coordination straightforward. Deep intrinsic discoloration from certain medications or trauma may respond less predictably, and in those situations we'll be honest with you and discuss alternatives such as composite bonding or porcelain veneers. We see patients of all ages, and whitening is generally a treatment for adults and older teens with fully developed permanent teeth.

What to Expect, Start to Finish

Whitening starts with a conversation. We offer a complimentary consultation, so you can come in, have us look at your teeth, and hear what's realistic before committing to anything.

  • An exam to confirm your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten
  • A cleaning, when it's due, so the gel contacts enamel rather than plaque and surface buildup
  • A shade check so you can see the starting point and the result
  • In-office treatment in a single appointment, or impressions for custom take-home trays
  • Instructions for use, sensitivity management, and keeping the results

Comfort matters to us during any appointment, which is why we keep a comfort menu available — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments. Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening; it usually fades within a day or two, and we'll give you specific guidance for managing it.

Keeping Your Results

For the first 48 hours after whitening, the enamel is more absorbent than usual, so we ask you to avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, berries, and tobacco. After that window, normal eating resumes — though the habits that caused the staining will gradually bring it back.

Routine care does most of the work: brushing twice a day, flossing, and keeping up with cleanings and exams at the interval we recommend. Rinsing with water after coffee helps. If you have take-home trays, occasional short touch-ups will maintain the shade for a long time.

Paying for Whitening

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary insurance benefits check, though whitening is cosmetic and typically isn't covered. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and under. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment, and has no annual maximum, deductible, waiting period, or pre-authorizations. CareCredit financing is available as well. Se habla español — call our Woodhaven office at 22500 Allen Rd. to schedule.
