Crowns in Riverview

You bite into something at dinner and feel a sharp twinge from a back tooth — the one with the big old filling you've been meaning to ask about. Or a molar that had a root canal years ago finally chips. These are the moments when a crown stops being a dental term and starts being the thing that saves your tooth. We see Riverview patients in exactly this situation every week at our Woodhaven office on Allen Rd., and the goal is always the same: keep your natural tooth working, comfortable, and looking like it belongs in your smile.
A dental crown is a custom-made cover that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. Think of it as a new outer surface for a tooth whose own structure can no longer handle daily chewing. Fillings replace a portion of a tooth; a crown wraps the whole thing, which is why it's the go-to restoration when too much tooth is missing or when the remaining walls are thin and at risk of fracturing.
Crowns come up in a wide range of situations. A tooth that has had root canal therapy — anterior, premolar, or molar — is often more brittle afterward and typically needs a crown to protect it. A tooth with a large, aging filling that keeps breaking down may be better served by full coverage. Cracked teeth, worn-down teeth from years of grinding, and teeth that have been repaired many times are all common candidates. Crowns also serve as the final restoration on a dental implant and as the anchors that hold a bridge in place when you're replacing a missing tooth.
- Protection from further fracture for teeth that are cracked, worn, or heavily filled
- Comfortable chewing restored on the side of the mouth you've been avoiding
- A natural appearance, with crowns shaped and shaded to match your surrounding teeth
- Support for other treatment, including bridges, implants, and teeth after root canal therapy
- A conservative alternative to extraction, since saving a natural tooth is usually preferable to replacing it
Deciding whether a crown is right for you starts with an exam and X-rays. Sometimes the better answer is a filling, composite bonding, or a porcelain veneer for a cosmetic concern. Sometimes decay or a fracture extends too far below the gum line and extraction with a tooth replacement option makes more sense. We talk all of that through honestly, and we offer a complimentary consultation so Riverview patients can get answers before committing to anything.
What the Crown Process Looks Like
At your first visit, we numb the area and gently reshape the tooth so the crown will fit over it without feeling bulky. Any decay or failing filling material is removed first. We then capture a precise record of the tooth and your bite, which is what the crown is built from. If there's damage to the gum tissue or not enough tooth structure showing, procedures like crown lengthening can be part of the plan.
What sets our office apart for Riverview families is our on-site dental lab. Crowns are fabricated and adjusted right here, which makes same-day crowns possible in many cases and keeps follow-up adjustments quick. Instead of shipping your case out and waiting, we can handle shaping, fit, and polish in-house. When a case does take two visits, you'll wear a temporary crown in between so the tooth stays protected and you can eat and smile normally. Comfort matters throughout — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments are all part of our comfort menu, and nitrous oxide or IV sedation is available for patients who need help relaxing.
Caring for Your Crown Afterward
A crowned tooth is still a real tooth underneath, so it needs the same care as the rest of your mouth: brushing twice a day, daily flossing around the margins, and regular cleanings and exams with our hygienists. Decay can still form where the crown meets the tooth, and gum health around the crown matters just as much.
Mild sensitivity in the first days is common as the tooth settles. If your bite feels high or something catches when you chew, call us — adjustments are simple and fast with our lab on site. If you grind your teeth, we can make a night guard to shield both your crown and your natural teeth. We also keep room for same-day emergency appointments if a crown ever loosens or comes off.
Paying for Crown Treatment
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and offer a complimentary insurance benefits check so you know your coverage before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and under, with no annual maximum, no deductibles, no waiting period, and no pre-authorizations. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments at 100%, plus 20% to 50% off other treatment. CareCredit financing is available to spread payments over time, and we're happy to walk Riverview patients through every option. Se habla español.
