Maybe it's been a couple of years since anyone looked in your mouth, or maybe a tooth has started feeling sensitive when you drink something cold and you'd rather know what's going on before it turns into a bigger problem. Either way, a dental exam is the place to start. For Riverview families, our office at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven is a short trip for a visit that covers the basics thoroughly — a look at every tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth — so you leave knowing exactly where you stand.

A dental exam is an organized evaluation of your oral health, and it's the foundation for everything else we do. One of our general dentists checks each tooth for decay, cracks, and worn or failing fillings, then reviews your gum health for signs of inflammation or gum disease. We take X-rays to see what the eye can't: decay between teeth, bone levels, impacted wisdom teeth, and problems developing below the gumline. An oral cancer screening is part of the visit as well, since early detection depends on someone looking regularly.

We also pay attention to how your teeth fit together and how they're wearing. Flattened edges, chipped enamel, or jaw soreness often point to nighttime grinding, which we can address with a night guard made in our on-site lab. Crowding or a shifting bite may be worth a conversation with Dr. Sayed, our board-certified orthodontist. If you snore or wake up tired, we can talk about sleep apnea oral appliances. The exam is where all of these threads get pulled together into one plan rather than a series of disconnected problems.

Essentially everyone benefits from a routine exam, and we see patients of all ages — from children at age one through teens, adults, and seniors. Riverview parents often bring the whole family in together, and we treat children with special healthcare needs as well. If you haven't been to a dentist in years, you're not an exception here; we'd rather see you now than after a small cavity becomes a root canal.

There are also situations where an exam shouldn't wait. If you have a toothache, a broken tooth, swelling, a lost filling or crown, or an injury, we offer same-day emergency appointments. New patients who are relocating, changing dentists, or transferring orthodontic care are welcome without a referral for oral surgery consultations, and we provide retainers for patients who finished treatment elsewhere.

Common reasons Riverview patients schedule an exam with us:

  • A routine checkup paired with a cleaning, fluoride treatment, or sealants
  • Tooth pain, sensitivity, or bleeding gums that hasn't gone away
  • A second opinion on treatment recommended somewhere else
  • Planning for implants, dentures, crowns, veneers, or whitening
  • Getting children established with a dental home early

What Your Visit Looks Like

Plan on a relaxed appointment. We'll review your health history and any medications, ask what's been bothering you, and take X-rays as needed. The dentist then performs the hands-on examination, often alongside one of our hygienists, who may complete your cleaning during the same visit. If scaling and root planing or periodontal maintenance is appropriate because of gum disease, we'll explain why and what it involves.

Afterward, we go over the findings with you plainly — what needs attention now, what we'll watch, and what's optional. You'll get a written treatment plan and an estimate before anything is scheduled. Because we're a multi-doctor practice with general dentists, an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, and an orthodontist under one roof, most follow-up care stays right here. Our in-house lab handles crowns, dentures, night guards, relines, and repairs, including same-day options.

Aftercare is usually straightforward: keep brushing and flossing daily, and return for the recall interval we recommend, typically two cleanings and exams a year. If we found early decay or gum inflammation, we'll be specific about home care changes that help. Comfort matters to us throughout — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments are available, and nitrous oxide or IV sedation can be discussed for anxious patients.

Insurance, Membership, and Payment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and will run a complimentary benefits check so you know your coverage before your appointment. Self-pay patients are welcome, and we accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and younger. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment — no annual maximum, deductibles, waiting periods, or pre-authorizations. CareCredit financing is available for larger treatment plans, and consultations are complimentary. Se habla español.
