Bone Grafting in Woodhaven

Bone Grafting in Woodhaven

If you've been told you don't have enough bone for a dental implant, or you're facing an extraction and wondering what happens to the empty socket afterward, bone grafting is usually the answer. It's one of the more common procedures we perform at our Woodhaven office at 22500 Allen Rd., and it quietly makes a lot of other dentistry possible — implants, stable dentures, and healthy gum tissue around existing teeth. Here's a straightforward look at what the procedure involves and how we handle it for our Woodhaven patients.

Your jawbone keeps its shape because tooth roots stimulate it every time you chew. When a tooth is removed or lost, that stimulation stops and the bone in that area begins to shrink. Over months and years, the ridge narrows and flattens. A bone graft adds grafting material to the area so your body can rebuild bone volume in the space, restoring a foundation that can hold an implant or support a well-fitting denture.

The material acts as a scaffold. Over a healing period, your own bone cells grow into and gradually replace it, leaving behind solid, living bone. That's why grafting is often done at the same appointment as an extraction — placing graft material into the socket right away, called socket preservation, helps maintain the ridge instead of letting it collapse and then rebuilding it later.

Not every situation is the same. Some patients need a small amount of material in a single socket. Others have been missing teeth for years and need more substantial rebuilding before implants are possible. Because our team includes five doctors covering general dentistry and oral surgery, we evaluate both the grafting itself and what comes afterward in one place.

Bone grafting makes sense for a number of different circumstances, and the reasons go beyond implants alone:

  • Preserving the socket after a simple or surgical extraction, including wisdom teeth removal, so the ridge holds its shape
  • Building a site for a dental implant when scans or exam findings show the bone is too thin or too short to hold one securely
  • Improving denture fit by maintaining ridge height, which affects how stable a complete or partial denture feels
  • Supporting teeth affected by gum disease, where bone loss around the roots has occurred
  • Repairing defects left behind by long-standing infection or a tooth that was lost years ago

Good candidates are patients whose gums are healthy enough to heal well and who are willing to follow aftercare instructions. If active gum disease is present, we typically treat that first with scaling and root planing or periodontal maintenance so the graft heals in a clean environment. We see patients of all ages, and we'll tell you honestly if grafting isn't necessary for your situation.

What the Procedure and Recovery Look Like

Treatment starts with a consultation — complimentary at our practice — where we examine the area, take X-rays, and explain whether grafting is needed and what it's preparing you for. We'll map out the full sequence, including timing for an implant, crown, or denture, so there are no surprises later.

On the day of the procedure, the area is thoroughly numbed. We offer nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation for patients who feel anxious about oral surgery. The gum tissue is opened, the site is cleaned, graft material is placed, and the area is closed with sutures. Most grafts take well under an hour, and when grafting accompanies an extraction, both happen in the same visit.

Afterward, expect some swelling and tenderness for a few days. We'll give you specific instructions: soft foods, no smoking, no poking at the site, gentle rinsing, and how to keep the area clean. Bone needs months to mature before an implant can be placed, so patience is part of the process. We schedule follow-up visits to confirm healing is on track. If anything feels wrong in the meantime, we offer same-day emergency appointments.
