A dental exam is the appointment where we actually look at everything — not just the tooth that hurts. At our office on Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, an exam means checking each tooth surface for decay, reviewing existing fillings and crowns for wear or leaking margins, measuring the health of your gums, screening for oral cancer, looking at how your teeth meet when you bite, and taking X-rays to see what the eye can't. It's the foundation of everything else we do, and it's how small problems get caught while they're still small and inexpensive to fix.

Most people do well with an exam about every six months, paired with a cleaning. That rhythm works because decay and gum disease move slowly at first and give few symptoms until they're advanced. A cavity between two back teeth, for example, usually causes no pain at all until it reaches the nerve — but it shows clearly on a bitewing X-ray months or years earlier, when a simple filling is all that's needed.

Exams aren't only for people with a perfect routine. We see plenty of patients in Woodhaven who haven't been to a dentist in years and aren't sure what they'll hear. That's fine — the point of the visit is to find out where things stand and build a plan you can actually follow. We treat all ages here, from children starting at age one through teens, adults and seniors, including children with special healthcare needs. If you wear dentures or partials, have implants, are mid-orthodontic treatment, or grind at night, the exam adapts to what you have going on.

Your first visit starts with a conversation. We ask about your medical history, medications, any sensitivity or pain, whether your jaw clicks or you wake with headaches, and what you'd like to change about your smile. That context matters — dry mouth from a medication, for instance, changes decay risk considerably.

From there, the clinical part is straightforward and comfortable:

  • X-rays appropriate to your history, to check between teeth, below old restorations, and around the roots and bone
  • A tooth-by-tooth look for decay, cracks, wear facets and failing fillings
  • Periodontal measurements around each tooth to identify gum disease early
  • An oral cancer screening of the tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and neck
  • A bite and jaw-joint check, plus a look at how your teeth are wearing against each other
  • A review of findings with you, in plain language, with photos or images when they help

Then we talk through what we found and what, if anything, needs attention — what's urgent, what we can watch, and what's purely optional. If you're in pain or something's broken, we can often address it the same day; we keep room for emergency appointments.

What Happens After the Exam

For many patients, the next step is a cleaning the same day, sometimes with fluoride, and nothing more. If we find early gum disease, we may recommend scaling and root planing followed by periodontal maintenance. Decay is handled with fillings; a cracked or heavily restored tooth may call for a crown. When a nerve is involved, root canal therapy is an option, and when a tooth can't be saved, we handle extractions and tooth replacement here as well.

Our in-house dental lab shortens a lot of these timelines. Crowns, dentures, night guards and other appliances are made and adjusted on site, which means same-day crowns, same-day dentures, and relines or repairs without mailing anything out. If the exam points toward orthodontics, Dr. Sayed, our board-certified orthodontist, can discuss braces or Invisalign at the same practice. Aftercare is mostly on you and mostly simple: brushing twice daily, flossing or using interdental cleaners, and keeping the recall interval we recommend — six months for most, more often if gum disease or high decay risk is in the picture.
