Dental Fillings in Woodhaven

Dental Fillings in Woodhaven

A small cavity rarely announces itself. Most of the ones we treat at our Woodhaven office are found during a routine exam and X-rays, long before anything hurts — a shadow between two molars, a soft spot in a groove, a chip along an old filling's edge. Catching decay at that stage is the whole point of a filling: we remove the damaged part of the tooth, rebuild it, and keep the problem from growing into something that needs a root canal or a crown.

A dental filling is a restoration that replaces tooth structure lost to decay, a fracture, or wear. Once a cavity forms, the enamel does not grow back, and the bacteria causing it keep working deeper toward the nerve. Cleaning out the decay and sealing the space stops that progression and restores the tooth's shape so you can chew normally again.

We place tooth-colored composite fillings, which are bonded directly to the tooth and shaded to blend with the surrounding enamel. The same composite material we use for fillings is also used for composite bonding, so small chips, worn edges, and gaps along the gumline can often be addressed in the same visit. Because the material bonds to the tooth, we can usually be conservative and keep more of your natural structure than older techniques allowed.

Most people who need a filling fall into one of a few groups: adults with early decay spotted on an X-ray, children and teens with cavities in their back teeth, patients with an older filling that has cracked or leaked around the margin, and anyone who has chipped a tooth. We see patients of all ages here, from age one through adulthood, and our team treats children with special healthcare needs as well.

Not every tooth can be restored with a filling. When decay has reached the nerve, root canal therapy is needed first — we perform root canals on front teeth, premolars, and molars. When too much tooth structure is gone to support a filling, a crown is the better option, and our on-site dental lab allows for same-day crowns in many cases. If a tooth cannot be saved, we also provide extractions and tooth replacement options. We will explain which category your tooth falls into before any treatment begins.

What the Appointment Is Like

We start with an exam and X-rays to confirm the extent of the decay and check the surrounding teeth. The area is numbed, the decayed portion is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and prepared for bonding. The composite is placed in layers, cured, then shaped and polished so your bite feels even. Most single fillings are finished in one visit.

Comfort is a priority throughout. Our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments. For patients who feel anxious about dental work, we offer nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation dentistry. Our staff includes Spanish speakers — se habla español — and we offer same-day emergency appointments when a filling has fallen out or a tooth has broken.

Here is what you can generally expect from the visit:

  • An exam and X-rays to confirm the diagnosis and rule out deeper problems
  • Local anesthetic so the area is fully numb before we begin
  • Removal of decay, then layered placement and curing of tooth-colored composite
  • Shaping, polishing, and a bite check before you leave
  • Clear aftercare instructions and a plan for your next preventive visit

Aftercare and Keeping Fillings Healthy

Numbness from the anesthetic usually wears off within a few hours; until it does, be careful not to bite your cheek or tongue. Composite fillings are cured during the appointment, so you can eat once the numbness is gone. Some temperature sensitivity for a few days is common. If your bite feels high or uneven after the anesthetic fades, call us — a quick adjustment takes only minutes.

Fillings last longest when the rest of your mouth stays healthy. Regular cleanings with our hygienist, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants on grooved back teeth all reduce the chance of new decay. If you grind your teeth, our in-house lab can make a night guard, which protects both your natural enamel and your restorations.
