Root Canal Therapy in Woodhaven

Root Canal Therapy in Woodhaven

A toothache that wakes you at night, lingering sensitivity to hot drinks, or a dull throb when you bite down often points to the same thing: inflamed or infected pulp inside the tooth. Root canal therapy treats that problem directly by removing the damaged tissue, disinfecting the inner chambers, and sealing the tooth so it can stay in your mouth and keep doing its job. At our office on Allen Rd. in Woodhaven, we perform root canal treatment on front teeth, premolars, and molars, and we handle the restoration afterward so you aren't bounced between offices.

Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve tissue and blood vessels called the pulp. Deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work on the same tooth, or a blow to the mouth can let bacteria reach that pulp. Once it's infected, it won't heal on its own, and the infection can spread into the bone around the root. A root canal clears the infection from within, which is why it so often relieves the pain people arrive with.

The alternative to treating an infected tooth is usually losing it. Keeping your natural tooth preserves your bite, keeps neighboring teeth from drifting, and spares you the longer road of extraction and tooth replacement. We offer implants, bridges, and dentures when a tooth truly can't be saved, but when the root structure is sound, saving it is almost always the simpler path.

Not all root canals are the same, and the tooth's position in your mouth changes how involved the appointment is. Anterior root canal therapy treats the incisors and canines at the front. These teeth typically have a single canal and a straightforward shape, so treatment tends to be the most direct of the three. Front teeth that have darkened after an injury or developed an abscess above the gumline are common candidates, and because they show when you smile, we pay close attention to the appearance of the final restoration.

Premolar root canal therapy covers the two teeth between your canines and molars on each side. Premolars often have one or two canals, placing them in the middle for complexity. Molar root canal therapy treats the back grinding teeth, which usually have three or more canals, sometimes curved or narrow. Molars do the heaviest chewing work, so these appointments take longer and the tooth almost always needs a crown afterward to protect it from fracture. Whichever tooth is involved, the goal and the basic steps are identical — only the anatomy differs.

What Treatment Involves and How to Prepare

We start with an exam and X-rays to confirm the pulp is the source of the problem and to map the canals. After the area is fully numbed, we create a small opening in the tooth, remove the infected pulp, clean and shape each canal, and fill them with a sealing material. The opening is then closed, and we plan the final restoration — frequently a crown, especially on premolars and molars.

Here's what Woodhaven patients can expect around the appointment:

  • A thorough exam and imaging before anything is decided, plus a complimentary consultation
  • Nitrous oxide or IV sedation available if dental anxiety makes treatment difficult
  • A comfort menu with blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix, and refreshments
  • Same-day emergency appointments when a tooth flares up unexpectedly
  • Crowns made and adjusted in our on-site dental lab, including same-day crowns
  • Care in Spanish — se habla español

Afterward, the treated tooth and surrounding gum may feel tender for a few days, which is normal. Chew on the other side until the permanent restoration is placed, brush and floss as usual, and call us if discomfort increases rather than fades. A restored tooth still needs regular cleanings and exams with our hygienist to stay healthy.

Paying for Root Canal Therapy

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and will run a complimentary benefits check so you know your coverage before treatment begins. We also welcome self-pay patients and accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for anyone 17 and under. It covers exams, X-rays, two cleanings, and two fluoride treatments at 100%, with 20% to 50% off other treatment, and there's no annual maximum, deductible, waiting period, or pre-authorization. CareCredit financing is available as well, so a larger treatment plan can be spread over time.

Care for Woodhaven Families Under One Roof

Our five doctors — general dentists, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, and a board-certified orthodontist — treat patients of all ages, from toddlers through adults, including children with special healthcare needs. Dr. Ghannam, our owner, earned his DDS from the University of Michigan in 1985.

Because we provide fillings, crowns, oral surgery, and tooth replacement in the same practice, a root canal doesn't mean coordinating between offices. We also see patients from Trenton, Riverview, and Flat Rock, and our mission is simple: first-class care with your comfort as the priority.
