Most dental problems don't announce themselves. A cavity between two back teeth, a pocket of gum inflammation, a cracked filling — these rarely hurt until they've grown into something bigger and more expensive. Preventive dentistry is simply the habit of catching those things early, while they're small and simple to handle. For our families in Woodhaven, Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock, that usually means two visits a year, a thorough look at everything, and a plan that keeps you out of the emergency chair.
Preventive care covers the routine work that protects healthy teeth and gums: a dental exam, a professional dental cleaning, X-rays, oral cancer screening, fluoride treatment, and dental sealants for teeth with deep grooves. During the exam we're looking at more than teeth — we check the gum tissue, the bite, existing crowns and fillings, and the soft tissues of the mouth and throat. Our hygienist removes the plaque and tartar that brushing can't reach, especially along the gumline and between teeth where gum disease tends to start.
This applies to just about everyone. We see children from age one through the teen years, adults, and older patients, including children with special healthcare needs. A toddler's first visit might be a quick, friendly count of the teeth and a talk with parents about brushing and snacks. A teenager in braces needs extra cleaning help around brackets. An adult with a history of gum disease may need periodontal maintenance on a tighter schedule, and someone who grinds at night may benefit from a custom night guard before the enamel wears down. Patients who already wear dentures or have implants still need regular checks of the tissue underneath and the fit of the appliance.
The most common question we hear is how often to come in. For most people, twice a year works well. If you've had scaling and root planing or active gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits until things stabilize. If it's been years since your last cleaning, that's fine — we'd rather see you now than have you keep putting it off. Nobody here is going to lecture you.
The second question is whether it will be uncomfortable. Sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, and past bad experiences are all real, and we work around them. Comfort is a priority for our whole team, and our comfort menu includes blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments. Nitrous oxide sedation is available for patients who need help relaxing, and IV sedation is available for more involved treatment. Let us know what's worried you in the past and we'll adjust.
It also helps to know what preventive care can lead to. If the exam turns up a small cavity, a dental filling usually solves it in one appointment. If something larger shows up, we have general dentists, an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, and a board-certified orthodontist under one roof, plus an on-site dental lab that makes and adjusts crowns, dentures and night guards here rather than shipping them out.
Aftercare and What Results Look Like
After a cleaning, your teeth may feel smooth and slightly sensitive for a day or so, especially if there was heavy tartar buildup or tender gums. Warm or room-temperature foods help. If you had fluoride applied, we'll tell you how long to wait before eating. If sealants were placed, they're set immediately and your child can eat normally.
Consistency is what makes preventive care work. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth once a day, and keeping your scheduled visits will do more for your long-term oral health than any single treatment. Sealants and fillings get checked at each visit, night guards can be adjusted or repaired in our lab, and gum health is re-measured so we can see whether what we're doing is working.
- Bring a list of your current medications and any changes to your health history
- Tell us about sensitivity, bleeding gums, jaw soreness or clenching
- Ask about sealants for your child's permanent molars as they come in
