Bleeding when you brush is easy to dismiss. So is a little puffiness along the gumline, or breath that never feels quite fresh no matter how often you rinse. Those small signals are often the earliest evidence of gum disease — and they are also the easiest stage to treat. At our Woodhaven office on Allen Rd., we see patients every week who had no idea anything was wrong until a routine cleaning revealed deeper pockets around the teeth. Catching that early changes everything about how simple the treatment can be.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place. It begins as gingivitis, when plaque and tartar build up along and just below the gumline and the gums respond with redness, swelling and bleeding. At this point the damage is reversible. When the bacteria are allowed to work deeper, the condition progresses to periodontitis, where the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth, forming pockets that trap more bacteria, and the supporting bone begins to break down. Left unaddressed, this is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Treatment is matched to the stage we find. For many patients, a thorough cleaning and improved home care are enough. For deeper pockets, we perform scaling and root planing — a careful, numbed cleaning below the gumline that removes hardened deposits from the root surfaces and smooths them so tissue can reattach. From there, most patients move onto periodontal maintenance, a more frequent cleaning schedule designed to keep the infection from returning. When gum recession has already exposed root surfaces, gum grafting can rebuild lost tissue, and bone grafting can restore support where bone has been lost. Our hygienists and general dentists work together on these cases, and we also offer gum contouring and crown lengthening when the gumline needs reshaping for health or appearance.

People come to us about their gums for very different reasons. Some are long-time patients whose pocket depths crept up over a few years. Others haven't seen a dentist in a decade and arrive worried about loose teeth or gums that bleed into the sink. Some are pregnant or managing diabetes and have noticed their gums becoming more sensitive. Others are preparing for implants, dentures, braces or Invisalign and need healthy gum tissue before that work can begin — a step we take seriously, because restorations and tooth movement both depend on a stable foundation.

A few things are worth knowing before you start. Scaling and root planing is done with local anesthetic, and we often treat one side of the mouth at a time so you stay comfortable. If dental anxiety has kept you away, nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation are both available here. Gum disease is also a chronic condition rather than a one-time problem, so the goal is control and stability through consistent care. And because we see patients of all ages, including children from age one and children with special healthcare needs, families can address gum health together rather than scheduling across multiple offices.

Aftercare and What Results Look Like

In the days after deep cleaning, it's normal for gums to feel tender and for teeth to be briefly sensitive to hot and cold. Warm salt-water rinses help, and we'll give you specific guidance on brushing and flossing the treated areas gently. Over the following weeks, healthy gums typically become firmer and less red, bleeding during brushing decreases, and pocket depths measured at your follow-up visit are often reduced.

Keeping those results depends on what happens next. Most patients return every three to four months for periodontal maintenance rather than the standard six, because the bacteria that caused the problem repopulate faster in previously affected areas. We re-measure pocket depths at these visits, screen for oral cancer, and watch for clenching or grinding that adds stress to already compromised support — a night guard made in our on-site lab is sometimes part of the plan. If a tooth cannot be saved, our team handles extractions, bone grafting and tooth replacement in house.

Paying for Treatment

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and will run a complimentary benefits check so you know your coverage before treatment begins. For patients without insurance, our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and younger, with exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments covered at 100% and 20% to 50% off other treatment — no deductibles, no waiting period and no annual maximum. CareCredit financing is available, and we accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

If your gums bleed, feel sore or have started to pull back, we'd be glad to take a look. Consultations are complimentary, and we welcome patients from Woodhaven, Trenton, Riverview and Flat Rock. Se habla español. Call us to schedule a visit.
