Wisdom teeth tend to make themselves known at the busiest possible time — during high school finals, in the middle of a college semester, or right before a family vacation. A dull ache behind the last molar, swollen gum tissue that catches food, or a jaw that feels stiff in the morning are all signals worth paying attention to. At our Woodhaven office, we evaluate third molars for patients of all ages and help you decide, with real information in front of you, whether removal makes sense now, later, or not at all.
Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars, and they usually try to come in during the late teens or early twenties. For some people, there is enough room in the jaw and the teeth arrive without trouble. For many others, the jaw simply runs out of space. When that happens, a wisdom tooth may come in sideways, stay partly buried under the gum, or press against the healthy molar in front of it. Dentists call this impaction, and it is one of the most common reasons we recommend removal.
Even wisdom teeth that look fine on the surface can cause problems you cannot see. Because they sit so far back, they are hard to brush and floss well, which invites decay and gum inflammation in an area that is difficult to treat. A partially erupted tooth can trap food and bacteria under a flap of gum tissue, leading to repeated soreness and swelling. We use an exam and X-rays to see exactly where each tooth sits, how the roots are shaped, and how close they are to nearby nerves and sinuses — then we talk through what we found in plain language before anything is scheduled.
Good candidates for wisdom teeth removal span a wide range. Teenagers and young adults often come in because a routine exam shows crowding or an impaction developing. Adults in their thirties, forties, and beyond sometimes arrive with a wisdom tooth that has finally decayed badly or that is contributing to gum problems. Patients finishing or maintaining orthodontic treatment may want third molars addressed as part of a larger plan, and because we have a board-certified orthodontist on staff, those conversations happen under one roof.
Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. If a tooth is fully erupted, functional, and easy to keep clean, monitoring it over time is a reasonable path. When removal is the better choice, the procedure may be a simple extraction for a tooth that has erupted normally, or a surgical extraction when a tooth is impacted or sits below the gumline. We offer both, along with nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation for patients who feel anxious or who need a longer appointment to pass comfortably. You do not need a referral to be seen for oral surgery here.
Things worth knowing before your visit:
- Arrange a ride home in advance if you are having IV sedation
- Tell us about all medications, supplements, and health conditions
- Plan for a few quiet days, especially around work, school, or sports
- Stock up on soft foods before the appointment, not after
- Ask any question that is on your mind — nothing is too small
Recovery, Aftercare, And What Results Look Like
The first day or two after surgery matter most. Swelling, mild bruising, and tenderness are normal, and we send you home with specific written instructions covering rest, cold compresses, rinsing, and what to eat. Protecting the blood clot in the socket is the single most important thing you can do, which is why we ask you to avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing early on. Soft foods, gentle care around the site, and following any prescribed medication schedule keep healing on track.
Most patients notice steady improvement over the following days as the gum tissue closes and the jaw loosens up. We check in and see you for follow-up as needed, and because we keep time open for emergency appointments, you are never left wondering what to do if something feels off over a weekend. Long term, the goal is a cleaner, more comfortable back corner of the mouth and one less source of trouble for the molars you want to keep.
