Why choose us

Benefits of Gum Contouring

Balanced Gum Line

We gently reshape uneven gum tissue so your smile looks more even and proportioned.

Less Gummy Smile

Removing excess tissue lets more of your natural tooth show when you smile.

Comfort Comes First

Blankets, warm towels, headphones and Netflix are part of our comfort menu during your visit.

Pairs With Cosmetics

Contouring can be combined with veneers, bonding or whitening for a complete smile makeover.

Affordable Options

We accept most PPO plans, CareCredit financing and our in-house membership plan for patients without insurance.

A smile can look uneven even when every tooth underneath is healthy. Sometimes the gum line sits lower on one tooth than its neighbor, sometimes it covers so much enamel that the teeth look short and square, and sometimes years of recession have left one tooth looking longer than the rest. Gum contouring is the procedure we use to reshape that gum tissue — removing excess, evening out the line, and letting the natural proportions of your teeth show. It's a small change in millimeters that often makes a noticeable difference in how your whole smile reads.

Gum contouring, sometimes called gum reshaping or a gum lift, adjusts the soft tissue that frames your teeth. In our Woodhaven office, we start by looking at the relationship between your lips, gums, and teeth when you talk and smile — not just at rest. That's where a "gummy smile" shows itself, and that's where small corrections pay off most. We map the new gum line against the length and width of the teeth so the result looks intentional rather than obviously altered.

The procedure itself is done with local anesthetic so the area is fully numb. For patients who feel uneasy about dental work of any kind, we also offer nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation, and our comfort menu — blankets, warm towels, neck pillows, headphones, Netflix and refreshments — is available during any visit. Treatment time depends on how many teeth are involved; reshaping a single tooth to match its neighbor is quicker than evening out an entire smile line.

People come to us about their gum line for very different reasons. A common one is purely cosmetic: teeth that look short because the gums sit too low, often noticed in photographs. Another is asymmetry, where one or two teeth have a higher or lower gum margin that draws the eye. We also see patients preparing for porcelain veneers, composite bonding, or crowns, where reshaping the tissue first gives the new restorations a cleaner, more balanced frame — something our on-site dental lab helps us coordinate closely.

There are also functional situations. When a tooth is broken or decayed near the gum line, there may not be enough tooth structure visible to hold a crown. In those cases crown lengthening, a closely related procedure, exposes more of the tooth so a restoration can be placed properly. And in cases of recession rather than excess tissue, gum grafting may be the better answer — adding tissue back instead of removing it. Part of our job at your visit is telling you honestly which of these fits your situation.

What Candidates Should Know

Healthy gums come first. If there's active gum disease, we treat that before any reshaping — through scaling and root planing, gum disease treatment, or periodontal maintenance as needed. Contouring inflamed tissue doesn't hold up, so stabilizing your periodontal health protects the result and your teeth over the long term.

A few things worth considering before you decide:

  • Gum contouring is usually elective and cosmetic, so insurance coverage varies; crown lengthening done to make a restoration possible is often viewed differently
  • Results are generally considered permanent, since reshaped tissue doesn't grow back the way it was
  • It pairs well with whitening, bonding, or veneers if you're planning a broader cosmetic update
  • Your bite, tooth length, and the amount of bone under the gums all affect what's realistically achievable

Aftercare and Results

Expect some tenderness and sensitivity in the treated area for several days. We'll give you specific instructions, which typically include soft foods at first, gentle brushing around the site, and avoiding anything that irritates healing tissue. Most of the visible swelling settles quickly, while the gum line continues to mature and settle into its final shape over the following weeks.

Because the shape is set the day of treatment, we take time beforehand to agree on exactly what we're aiming for. If restorative work is planned afterward, we'll schedule it once the tissue has healed enough to take accurate impressions. We're also available for emergency dental appointments if anything concerns you during recovery.

Payment, Financing, and Booking

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and self-pay patients, and we'll run a complimentary benefits check so you know where you stand before treatment. CareCredit financing is available, and for patients without insurance our in-house membership plan is $199 a year for adults and $99 for ages 17 and under — no deductibles, waiting periods, or annual maximum, with exams, X-rays, two cleanings and two fluoride treatments covered at 100% and 20% to 50% off other treatment. We take cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

Our consultations are complimentary. If you've been bothered by your gum line, come see us at 22500 Allen Rd. in Woodhaven — we're glad to welcome patients from Trenton, Riverview, Flat Rock and the surrounding communities. Se habla español.
